This artist's impression shows an exoplanet passing in front of (transiting) a star in a solar system other than our own. The coloured chart shows the atmospheric spectrum of the exoplanet, which allows scientists to identify the chemical composition of this foreign body's atmosphere. Na and K are symbols for sodium and potassium respectively. Humans would not do well living on such a planet!
This graphic will form part of the "The Living Universe" exhibition, to be displayed at the ESO Supernova, opening in spring 2018.
